Leonard Cheshire Disability & Barclays
In this section you can find out about Leonard Cheshire Disability and Barclays and how the two organisations are working in partnership to provide Ready to Start.
About Leonard Cheshire Disability
The charity has been providing support to disabled people for close to 60 years and now has an international network that extends its reach into 55 countries worldwide.
The charity was founded by the late Group Captain Leonard Cheshire Disability VC, OM, from whom the charity derives its name. The founder had a very simple and powerful belief that it is what a person can do that matters rather than what isn't possible. That enabling spirit lies behind everything the charity does and Ready to Start very much stems from this central conviction.
The charity's work is very varied, including residential care, supported living, day centres, Care At Home and campaigning work. Leonard Cheshire Disability has also developed a very strong reputation for delivering training and support programmes that enable disabled people to develop the skills they need to go on and find employment. It is this existing track-record that enables Leonard Cheshire Disability to now offer this exciting new self-employment support initiative.
About Barclays
Barclays is committed to an extensive community investment programme. The bank is working with Leonard Cheshire Disability as an active example of its inclusive approach to banking and enterprise. As well as providing over £3 million funding for the programme, Barclays' employees will be on hand to be 'buddies' for disabled people who undertake the Ready to Start programme. In this way disabled participants can benefit from the direct support of a Barclays employee which will help ensure that each trainee will be, quite literally, ready to start his or her own business come the end of the training.
